Matthew Palmer is a Senior Research Associate and lead instrumentation developer in the Center for Infrastructure Based Safety System (CIBSS) at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI). He has researched and developed guidelines for airport garage lighting and researched the effects dirt accumulation on LED street lighting. He has developed advanced instrumentation for characterizing lighting parameters robotically, tracking driver behavior as they approach emergency vehicles, and developed a mobile laser extinction-based fog measurement instrument. Mr. Palmer has a broad engineering and science background that includes electrical engineering, optical engineering, sensing and instrumentation engineering that goes beyond his degrees in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. Mr. Palmer has 39 publications and 2 publications pending in a variety of lighting, optic, and sensing topics.
