Karoline Pershell

Karoline received her BS in Mathematics from the University of Tennessee at Martin, where she was a member of the UTM Rodeo Team as the first full time female bull rider in the collegiate circuit. She received her MS and PhD in Mathematics from Rice University. Following graduation, Dr. Pershell returned to UTM as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics, where she has also had the privilege of teaching overseas at Qingdao University in China and at the University of Hyderabad in India as a Fulbright Scholar. In 2013, Karoline was awarded the AAAS Science & Technology Diplomacy Fellowship, through which she joined the Department of State as Evaluation Coordinator at the Foreign Service Institute, where she won two Benjamin Franklin Awards for her work in support of diplomacy. In 2015, she became Lead Data Scientist for Zenti, a Silicon Valley startup focused on sentiment analysis of social media data and led algorithm optimization. From 2018-2020, she served as Executive Director of the Association for Women in Mathematics, a national professional society, where her work focused on support of individual women pursuing careers in the mathematical sciences as well as driving institutional change towards creating welcoming environments. Dr. Pershell is currently the COO and SRT Labs, a software company that brings essential legacy infrastructure into a unified data management ecosystem to monitor, analyze and automate systems across connected communities.
